Cultivating Inner Calm Through a Daily Mood Journal and Simple Breathing Practice
Our time together in this mindful journey brings us to day three of a transformative voyage. Gently, steadily, like the lotus echoing in the pond’s mirror, our mindfulness journey is unfolding. Today, let’s dive a little deeper, nurturing ourselves through the grace and simplicity of our breath.
The Breathing Exercise in Understandable Bites
Our breath is a comforting companion in our mindfulness journey, a gentle enigma sometimes unnoticed in a world that's always in motion. This beautiful dance of air, possibly the most humble yet powerful tool you possess, requires just a little bit more of your awareness now.
And so, let's dedicate today to learning a simple breath meditation known as Samma Vayama or the "Right Effort." With time, patience, and practice, it'll be a lantern leading you through the labyrinth of your consciousness to a sanctuary of tranquility within.
Here’s a step-by-step guide:
Find a comfortable spot: Opt for a serene space where you won't be disturbed— let's call it your little sanctuary. Sit comfortably in a chair with your back straight, feet flat on the ground, or on a cushion with your legs crossed— whatever feels most comfortable for you.
Close your eyes: Gently close your eyes, and invite a loving calm over yourself. This is your time, your moment with yourself.
Focus on your breath: Bring your attention to your breath. Rather than altering it, let it happen naturally—observe its rhythm, its flow.
Acknowledge thoughts and bring focus back to breath: As thoughts begin to wander into your attention, accept them, softly acknowledge them, and guide your focus back to your breath.
Continue: Keep your attention focused on your breath for as long as you can.
Breathe in Rhythm with Life, Three Times a Day
In this busy world, taking time for ourselves can sometimes feel like a luxury. But remember that it's as vital as the sun is to the morning. It's our path to presence, our thread to tranquility. As part of our mindfulness challenge, I invite you to practice this simple breathing exercise three times a day—morning, noon, and night.
Imagine starting your day with a moment of serenity, catching your breath at the top of the afternoon, and unwinding in the evening. Interwoven throughout your day, this tranquil practice can rely on the rhythm of your life, smoothly integrating mindfulness into your daily routine.
Remember, there is no judgment here; whether your mindful breath lasts 5 minutes or 20, it's perfect in its purpose—to guide you back to the here and now, to yourself.
As we amble on this 30-day mindfulness journey, know that you are not alone. Together, with the gentle ebb and flow of every mindful breath, we are nurturing self-discovery—a breath at a time, a day at a time. Always remember, the journey is yours, the pace is yours, and the destination is within you—in your beautiful, wise, and rhythmic breath. And remember, every inhale is a new beginning, and every exhale... is a gentle release.
